| Ecuador Travel Guide Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see photo_1 Ecuador is small country in South America. It derives its name from the fact that it lies exactly on the Equator. Ecuador neighbours Peru and Colombia, are bigger when it comes to size however, Ecuador as a tourist destination is their equal. Ecuador offers beautiful old towns, such as the capital Quito, with its big and lively old town, filled with museums, churches, old mansions as well as shops and small restaurants. Then there is Santo Domingo, a rapid growing city which is centrally located in the coast side with a warmer climate. The highland of the Andes, with its many Indian villages with their colorful markets, that every photographer and shopper will find an absolute treat. High mountain tops and active volcanoes are never far away. The Amazon basin with its tropical forest offers wildlife and hiking possibilities as well as the chance to get to know the habits of the Indians that live in the Amazon region. Finally you might be able to visit the Galapagos islands . These are a must to all nature lovers. They offer many animals you will not find anywhere else in the world. Explore Ecuador and be sure to have a holiday you will never forget. Ecuador is a great place with many features to choose from, one remarkable place is Guayaquil. This Port located south west of Ecuador, had been going through a tremendous transformation with an investment of over USD/. 800 million dollar this Port located on the Ecuadorean Coast has become the new tourist destination of the entire country. Guayaquil's new international airport offers non stop flight to the entire country including the famous "Galapagos Islands" and Quito, most of the US and European Airlines have non stop service from Guayaquil to the entire world, if you are looking for nice beaches as well only an hour and half driving from Guayaquil's downtown area are the beaches of Salinas and Montañita with extraordinary places to see, try most of water sports are available from Salinas, a nice hotel no doubts about it is call BARCELO located right on the Salinas Malecon Harvor they offer 'All inclusive' package with reasonable prices. ________History Edit This Advanced indigenous cultures flourished in Ecuador long before the area was conquered by the Inca empire in the 15th century. In 1534 the Spanish arrived and defeated the Inca armies and Spanish colonists became the new elite. The indigenous population was decimated by disease in the first decades of Spanish rule--a time when the natives were also forced into the "encomienda" labor system for Spanish landlords. In 1563 Quito became the seat of a royal audiencia (administrative district) of Spain. After independence forces defeated the royalist army in 1822 Ecuador joined Simon Bolivar's Republic of Gran Colombia only to become a separate republic in 1830. The 19th century was marked by instability with a rapid succession of rulers. The conservative Gabriel Garcia Moreno unified the country in the 1860s with the support of the Catholic Church. In the late 1800s world demand for cocoa tied the economy to commodity exports and led to migrations from the highlands to the agricultural frontier on the coast. A coastal-based liberal revolution in 1895 under Eloy Alfaro reduced the power of the clergy and opened the way for capitalist development. The end of the cocoa boom produced renewed political instability and a military coup in 1925. The 1930s and 1940s were marked by populist politicians such as five-time president Jose Velasco Ibarra. In January 1942 Ecuador signed the Rio Protocol to end a brief war with Peru the year before; Ecuador agreed to a border that conceded to Peru much territory Ecuador previously had claimed in the Amazon. After World War II a recovery in the market for agricultural commodities and the growth of the banana industry helped restore prosperity and political peace. From 1948-60 three presidents--beginning with Galo Plaza--were freely elected and completed their terms. Recession and popular unrest led to a return to populist politics and domestic military interventions in the 1960s while foreign companies developed oil resources in the Ecuadoran Amazon. In 1972 a nationalist military regime seized power and used the new oil wealth and foreign borrowing to pay for a program of industrialization land reform and subsidies for urban consumers. With the oil boom fading Ecuador returned to democracy in 1979 but by 1982 the government faced a chronic economic crisis including inflation budget deficits a falling currency mounting debt service and uncompetitive industries. The 1984 presidential elections were narrowly won by Leon Febres-Cordero of the Social Christian Party (PSC). During the first years of his administration Febres-Cordero introduced free-market economic policies took strong stands against drug trafficking and terrorism and pursued close relations with the United States. His tenure was marred by bitter wrangling with other branches of government and his own brief kidnaping by elements of the military. A devastating earthquake in March 1987 interrupted oil exports and worsened the country's economic problems. Rodrigo Borja of the Democratic Left (ID) party won the presidency in 1988. His government was committed to improving human rights protection and carried out some reforms notably an opening of Ecuador to foreign trade. The Borja Government concluded an accord leading to the disbanding of the small terrorist group Alfaro Lives. However continuing economic problems undermined the popularity of the ID and opposition parties gained control of Congress in 1990. In 1992 Sixto Duran-Ballen won in his third run for the presidency. His government's popularity suffered from tough macroeconomic adjustment measures but it succeeded in pushing a limited number of modernization initiatives through Congress. Duran-Ballen's vice president Alberto Dahik was the architect of the administration's economic policies but in 1995 Dahik fled the country to avoid prosecution on corruption charges following a heated political battle with the opposition. A war with Peru erupted in January-February 1995 in a small remote region where the boundary prescribed by the 1942 Rio Protocol was in dispute. Abdala Bucaram from the Guayaquil-based Ecuadorian Roldosista Party (PRE) won the presidency in 1996 on a platform that promised populist economic and social reforms and the breaking of what Bucaram termed as the power of the nation's oligarchy. During his short term of office Bucaram's administration drew criticism for corruption. Bucaram was deposed by the Congress in February 1997 on grounds of alleged mental incompetence. In his place Congress named Interim President Fabian Alarcon who had been President of Congress and head of the small Radical Alfarist Front party. Alarcon's interim presidency was endorsed by a May 1997 popular referendum. Congressional and first-round presidential elections were held on May 31 1998. No presidential candidate obtained a majority so a run-off election between the top two candidates Quito Mayor Jamil Mahuad of the Popular Democracy party and Alvaro Noboa was held on July 12 1998. Mahuad won by a narrow margin. He took office on August 10 1998. On the same day Ecuador's new constitution came into effect. ___________Practical Information Edit This Galapagos Islands was by far one of the most amazing places I've been. Many unique animals not seen anywhere else in the world. The difference of this place versus many others is that you get within several feet of these creatures which allows for awesome photographs. The wildlife is so protected it does not have the fear many travellers have experienced (like hiking in a Costa Rican rainforest for three hours to see one sloth 200 yards away as a spot in a tree). Avoid the travel agent and save yourself thousands of dollars by flying to quito, Equador and booking a flight over for less than $400. Once in Santa Cruise, one of three inhabited islands, Jenny at Moonrise travel can book you on a cruise to several islands or individual day trips. This is still Equador and you can get $15 per night accomidations. This paradise is is not as untouchable as we are led to believe! [Add Practical address] More Practical Information Edit This If you are wanting to get a good taste of the country I highly recomend traveling via bus througout the country. There is much to see and you can easily choose the bus routes out of Guayaquil that go through the national parks. type: Tourist information World66 rating: [rate it] __________Getting Around Edit This Contributors October 19, 2006 new by svetico [Add Local transport mode] Travel in Ecuador Edit This The most economical way to travel in Ecuador is to go via bus. All of the major cities have a bus station with charter buses that leave hourly to go to outlying towns, or even across the country. A perk of this is that you have the opprotunity to see the beauty of the country. Do be cautious of the sales children the food they are selling is not guarenteed sanitary; as well as traveling on the overnight busses between Guayaquil/Cuena/Quito. If taking a bus is not your forte there are domestic flights to the countries major cities of Quito, Guayaquil and more.. World66 rating: [rate it] ___________Getting There Edit This San Cristobal Airport (Galapagos) San Cristobal Airport (Galapagos) B. Silverberg [Add Global transport mode] Airline suggestions Edit This The cheapest departure cities to reach Ecuador are Los Angeles, Miami, and New York City. Houston and Panama City can also be used. American Airlines, Mexicana, and LAN sometimes have fare sales, but expect to pay about $500 or more round-trip. If you are not in a hurry (it takes most of the day), you can use Santa Barbara Airlines from Miami to either Quito (the capital) or Guayaquil (the hub for the Galapagos) via Venezuela for about $150 each way. In my opinion, Guayaquil's airport is much nicer and is being expanded this year (2005). Quito's more.. type: By Air World66 rating: [rate it] email: thehebrewhoya(at)yahoo(dot)com __________Economy Edit This Economy—overview: Ecuador has substantial oil resources and rich agricultural areas. As an exporter of primary products such as oil bananas and shrimp fluctuations in world market prices can have a substantial domestic impact. Growth has been uneven in recent years as the government has repeatedly initiated ill-conceived fiscal stabilization measures. The populist government of Abdala BUCARAM Ortiz proposed a major currency reform in 1996 but popular discontent with new austerity measures and rampant official corruption undermined his government's position. Congress replaced BUCARAM with Fabian ALARCON in February 1997. ALARCON has adopted a minimalist economic program that puts off major decisions until the next elected government takes office in August 1998. Ecuador joined the World Trade Organization in 1996 but has failed to comply with many of its accession commitments. Growth slowed to 2.0% in 1996 due to a lack of investment caused by political uncertainty and high domestic interest rates but economic activity picked up in 1997. Exports and economic growth in 1998 may be adversely affected by lower world oil prices and to a smaller extent by El Nino. GDP: purchasing power parity—$53.4 billion (1997 est.) Flora The principal attraction of the hilly forest is, of course, the trees, some soaring higher than 46 m. Common species are cinnamon, silkcotton, jacaranda and several leguminous trees. The alluvial plains, located on the terraces of the principal rives, support great concentrations of palm trees. Napo River The principal Amazon artery for visitors is the Napo River, a major tributary of the main Amazon River. Its basin is 1400 Km. long and one to three miles wide. As a result of fluvial dynamics, the Napo's 130 islands are covered by young forests, which provide refuge and nesting sites for a multitude of bird species, many of them migratory. Ecosystem The Amazonas ecosystem, particularly its tropical rain forest, is considered to be one of the richest and most complex communities of plant and animal life in the world. The region is characterized by huge and diverse amounts of flora and fauna with extraordinary variations in their habitats and micro habitats. In the jungles of the Upper Amazon 100 species of trees per acre habe been recorded. In Central America, only up to 40 species per acre have been discovered. In the temperate forests of North America and Europa, rarely more than 20 different species exist per acre. The Amazon's rivers, lakes, streams and marshlands support over 600 species of fish and more than 250 species of amphibians and reptiles. The lagoons of the Napo and Aguarico River basins are home to colonies of two species of caymans that grow to over 13 feet in length. Conservation Ecuador's extensive national park system, scientific station and protected areas cover nearly a 7.5 million acres. To preserve areas, Ecuador has created the Yasuni National Park Biosphere Reserve8, the Limoncocha Ecological Reserve9, the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve10 and others. The Napo and Aguarico River basins offer multiple possibilities for you to enjoy the ecosystem complexes, alluvial plains, swamps and flooded areas all of which are inhabited by a variety of species. The Yuturi, Yasuni, Tiputini, Tivacuno and Cononaco rivers are completely surrounded by virgin forest. __________Tours and Excursions Edit This Amazon tours or cruises in Ecuador are unique wilderness experiences, being under the canopy of millenary trees as you listen to hundreds of birds is overwhelming. Your really should not expect to see any large animals when visiting the Amazon, let it be a surprise, animals are very shy and you may a few feet away but will never spot the Jaguar. An Amazon tour is to see the forest, listen to the birds (spot a few) and with much luck see some larger animals as well. The experience it itself is unique, as you walk through small trails, ride in a dugout canoe and climb a canopy tower you will see the work of nature at its wildest. Bahía is a quiet tourist town that primarily caters to the middle and upper class of Quito and Guayaquil that have vacation condos here. This area is almost completely undiscovered by the rest of the world. Bahía has the lowest crime rate in all of Ecuador, and probly is the cleanest as well with daily garbage service. You may be thinking that because you're on the Equator that the weather is hot, sticky, and buggy. Nothing could be further from the truth, Infact you will be in for a very pleasant surprise! Here in Bahía, there has never been a hurricane or tropical storm, and lightning is extremely rare. Bahía is in a dry tropical belt only about 60 miles wide; there are even cactus growing near here! During what they call the rainy season, we average an hour or two of light rain in the evening per week! The average daytime temperature during the months of November through April is about 85 degrees with moderate humidity. For March through May temperatures are in the low 80's. June through October we have very low humidity and daytime temps of 70-78 degrees. In addition, the daily sea/land breeze pattern means that there's almost always a pleasant breeze this place is almost unknown outside of Ecuador and would be the perfect place to retire! A lot of guesthouses and specialised restaurants serve only for the needs of this group of tourists. It is known for its rather mild climate and as the gateway between the Andes Mountains and the Oriente region of Amazonian jungle. The town is built dramatically on a shelf under the steep slopes of the Tungurahua Volcano and has been regularly threatened by volcanic activity. Many Ecuadorians come here for the weekend to enjoy the many popular hot springs and thermal baths. The area is also excellent for walking trails that frequently lead to high waterfalls set amid the spectacular mountain scenery. The town itself is famed for the Church of the Virgin of the Holy Water. The Virgin is credited with many miracles and the church has become a place of pilgrimage for those seeking her blessing. _________Sights Edit This [Add Sight] Basilica Edit This Inside the Basilica is an entertaining collection of murals which describe local miracles attributed to the Virgin of the Holy Waters, the town's spiritual protector. Flights can also be found from Guayaquil and Cuenca, though those often involve a stop in Quito en route to Coca. The bus route between Coca and Quito is long and can be very cold at night, though the views as you ascend from the rainforest up into the cordillera are breathtaking. Also be aware that you pass through several military checkpoints on this bus route; your passport will be checked and you may be patted down by uniformed military police. In my experience most women were spared the full search, but all men, local or tourist, were required to "spread 'em" against the bus. ::::::::::::Loja Travel Guide Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see Loja, seen from the road south Loja, seen from the road south Joosts Loja is an unjustly overlooked town. It's one of Ecuadors oldest cities and a modern town with a rich cultural heritage. It was the first city in Ecuador to be electrified and it´s known for the rich culture of its habitants. This is the kind of city that can be best explored with help of a local: use the hospitalityclub.org to find contacts. However, the city center can be explored in a couple of hours and there isn´t much to do around the city. That´s why most people just pass through, on route to the nearby Podocarpus National Park, which can be entered from tourist haven Vilcabamba and the more old fashioned town of Zamora, famous for having the biggest watch in the world. The advantage of going through Vilcabamba is that you can easily travel further south to Peru. ::::::::Manta Travel Guide Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see The wide beach at Manta. Richard Ehrenberg, 2005 Manta is a picturesque and important port on the Pacific Ocean, located in a dry tropical forest with an average annual temperature of 25 degrees Celsius (77? F). Because it has some of South America's most breathtaking beaches, Manta was selected as the site of the sixth South American Windsurfing Championship. It is reknowned for its diving and sport fishing. It also serves as the primary industrial port of Ecuador's tuna industry. In addition, Manta hosts an International Theater Festival in September. Sporting events take place in November, and also from January through April. In the city one also finds a selection of first rate night clubs, amusement parks, and casinos. Also, one of the more reknowned Spanish schols in Ecuador has the main branch in Manta: Academia de Espanol Surpacifico. Manta has a rich history: it was originally settled by the pre-Hispanic Mante?a culture. Today it is a primary city in the province of Manab?. Nearby in the province is the famous Isla de la Plata, which has flora and fauna similar to that found in the Gal?pagos Islands. On Isla de la Plata one finds such unique species as blue-footed boobies and frigate birds. One can also see whales there from June through September. Produced in Manab? and known throughout the world are the original and official "Panama" hats, which are made just outside of Manta in the town of Montecristi. Manab? is also famous for its delicious cuisine, much of which is the best in the country. For those who enjoy seafood Manta is second to none. Manta has its own airport with direct flights to Quito and Guayaquil. From Manta one can easily and quickly access other destinations of interest in this small but diverse country. Ecuador contains four entirely distinct regions, each unique inits climate and traditions; they are the Oriente (jungle), Sierra (mountains), Costa (tropical coast), and the Gal?pagos Islands. Montanita has developed in to a mecca of surf enthusiasts which come from all over the world to experience possibly Ecuador´s best surfing location. The town is small and basically is two exciting and funky streets filled with cafes, surf board renters, and vendors. During the week, the town is somewhat quite with tourists drinking in the small cafes while not catching waves. The weekends fill up as party goers get ready for a few drinks at Montanitas many resturants adn bars. Montanita is quite full of Ecuadorian tourists along with the international backpacker scene. Designed for the international and ecuadorian tourist, Montanita is great place to get relax, surf, and drink. It´s an easy place to spend a few days which can easily turn into several weeks or more. It is like an oasis on teh coast, and many come back time and time again. Their are plenty of hostals down the two tourist streets. Recomendations include Casa Blanca (although thurs-sat night, their bar makes is quite loud to sleep through), Ricky´s (for a laid back cheap place to stay), and my personal favorite, Charo´s (make sure to ask for their new rooms as they are a lot better than the older ones). Accomodation ranges from $5USD for a dorm to $15 for a nice private room. The centre of town can be noisely, so those staying awhile often graduate to the quieter hostals. A recommendation is the new Montanita Eco Cabanas (just across the bridge), set in spacious grounds just 3 minutes walk from the centre of town. Quiet and tranquil with large swimming pool and Jacuzzi There is a online guide of accomodations that include the most populars hotels of Montanita: http://www.infomontanita.com. Montanita is also an excellent place to learn Spanish. Montanita Spanish school is located right on the main beach and is highly recommended. Montanita is two ATMS, and also a small bank (in front of the Montanita Hotel) that is open Thursdays to Tuesdays. It is possible to pull out up to $1000USD on your Visa/Mastercard with your passport. A nice town north of Quito. Traveling from Quito to Otavalo will take around 2 hours. It is probably the best place in the whole country to buy handicrafts and Indian clothes, but you have to bargain hard. You will enjoy a lot visiting the main Andean market of South America. It has a good tourist infrastructure. Once you are there there are many local buses that travel to interesting places that you should visit once you are here. The surrounding mountains are breathtaking. By the way, many Indigenous Ecuadorians playing music and selling these kinds of things are actually from the Otavalo area. The population of Otavalo is predominantly indigenous (Quechua) and they are actually very successful in creating a prosperous self sustainable city. They own many businesses themselves, have done excellent education/schooling and they are an excellent example for the rest of the indigenous people in the region. Many of them also travel extensively overseas... __________Getting There Edit This [Add Global transport mode] By bus Edit This Busses leave in Quito from the Terminal Terrestre Cumandá. I strongly recommend the experience of touring the Indian villages that surround Otavalo and meeting Indian families and seeing how they make the fine sweaters, hats, weavings and other craft articles sold in the market. You need a tourist guide for this, and the best one in Otavalo is Rodrigo Mora of Zulaytur. He's an anthropologist, with really good connections in the Indian communities. He's also just a very fun guy to spend an afternoon with. A bundle of energy with a very electric personality and strong intellect. His office is on the second floor at Colon and Sucre streets. Competitors also call themselves "Zulay this" and "Zulay that" to try to ride on his coat tails, because so many guidebooks recommend Zulaytur. Don't be fooled. He's also an excellent resouce for doing horseback riding, or a volcano hike, or a trip to the lakes nearby. Here's his phone: 593 (9) 6938 613. One of the Zig-zags. Richard Ehrenberg Riobamba is a small town in the Andes. It is mainly popular with travelers because of its Indian markets. The town is filled every Saturday with woolen blankets pigs and produce. The market frequented by Amerindians from the neighboring villages sprawls through several town squares and streets. The town houses a good museum, the Museum of Sacred Art (paintings sculptures and jewelry) housed in the old Convent of the Sisters of the Conception. The city itself has some fine old buildings and pretty views of the surrounding peaks. It also makes a good base for visiting Chimborazo. A cool thing to do is to take a 3-6 hour train trip through the Andean Sierra on one of the oldest trains in the world to a place called "Nariz Del Diablo", or "Devel's Nose". The trip starts every Sunday morning at 6 A.M., at Riobamba's train station. The cost should be around $20 for a ticket. The proceeds go to reparation of their antequated railroad system. It's an agricultural village at the end of the paved road in from Zapotal (on the main Santo Domingo to Guayaquil road, between Quevedo and Babahoyo). It takes about an hour and $1 from Zapotal, the last bus leaves around 6pm from Zapotal. It's well off the beaten track but interesting to visit for a glimpse of rural agricultural life in Ecuador in the tropical zone between the mountains and the sea. Local crops include oranges, plantains (savoury bananas), bananas, oritos (baby bananas), maize, cacao (chocolate) and sugarcane. Around 70% of Ecuador's population is involved in agriculture in one way or another, and here the proportion is probably well over 90%. There are no famous tourist attractions in the area, but plenty of opportunities for walking, hiking, etc. There are some small, ancient petroglyphs (stone carvings) nearby, ask locally for a guide to take you there. The lush vegetation supports wildlife, especially higher up the valley in the few remaining areas of virgin forest. There are hummingbirds even in the village, and toucans can be seen higher in the forest. There is one very basic and noisy hotel right where the buses depart, hooting as they go, all through the night. The other option is to stay with local families, which can be arranged through a charity project, Eco-Friendly Farmstays Ecuador ( www.farmstaysecuador.org, tel +593 3 2656216). They will make/help you plant a tree for each day of your stay. They can also arrange rafting trips on balsawood rafts on local rivers. When Thor Heyerdahl built his famous Kon-Tiki raft (in the same style as has been used here for hundreds of years), he bought one of the huge balsa trunks from this area. Note that there are no banking facilities in this area so bring enough cash for the duration of your visit. :::::::::Santo Domingo de Los Colorados Travel Guide Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see El Indio Colorado, Sto Dmgo de los Colorados El Indio Colorado, Sto Dmgo de los Colorados JBC Although Santo Domingo de los Colorados is not as old as other towns in the country, Santo Domingo offers now a wide range of fine restaurants, five stars hotels, excellent stores for the shopping pleasure, bars, discos, antros and pubs for the night life and lately the new mall located in the north side of Sto Domingo "La avenida Quito". _________Practical Information Edit This This city is centrally located that from there you can travel Coast, Sierra, and to the west the rain forest or "Oriente" as we call it.
