Salzburg is dubbed the 'Rome of the North' because of its many churches. It is a compact town easy to get around on foot.

Salzburg is packed with attractions: churches, mansions, museums. The old city offers all of those on a small surface.

On the outskirts of the city is one of Salzburg’s top attractions Hellbrunn Castle. Its water gardens seen in The Sound of Music are great fun especially for kids: When Archbishop Markus Sitticus built the place in the 1600s he had trick fountains mounted in the floors and walls. To satisfy his quirky sense of humor he occasionally sprayed his guests by activating a secret mechanism.

Located at the end of the Getreidegasse, a famous street in Salzburg, where many of the world-renown guesthouses and shops are located in the old town is St. Blaise's Church looking toward the Moenschsberg. The Gothic St. Blaise's Church (Blasiuskirche) is located at the very base of the limestone cliff, and has been described as "Gothic Salzburg at its unaltered best." Unlike many of the other churches in the town, this one is pristine, as it was not damaged or rebuilt numerous times. Construction began in 1327 and it was consecrated in 1350 and served as a hospital more..

This fortress atop a hill overlooking Salzburg and the surrounding valley dates to the 11th century (begun in 1077) and was enhanced significantly over the centuries, particularly by the Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach, whose efforts were completed under Prince Archbishop Max Gandolf Kuenberg in 1681. The interior features late Gothic secular rooms. It is the largest fully-preserved fortress in central Europe. It has been used as a fortress, barracks for soldiers, and a dungeon. It only ceased being a military outpost in 1861. Because it has been refurbished numerous more..

A very pink (!) pastel church in the Residenzplatz, St. Michael's Church (Michaelskirche). It's the oldest church in Salzburg, mentioned in official documents for the first time in 813 AD. It probably dates to around 800 AD. One source states that was originally built in 774 by St. Virgil, but was replaced by a new structure from 1181-1200 in the Romanesque style. This structure was damaged by fire and reconstructed again in 1598. Yet another structure was built in 1614 under Prince Archbishop Marus Sittikus, which was designed by Santino Solari; it was finally consecrated in more..

Storia

Origini, Impero Romano e Medioevo

Cultura e luoghi d'interesse turistico

Hellbrunn

E inoltre:

  • il Convento dei Benedettini di Sankt Peter;
  • il cimitero di Petersfriedhof;
  • la chiesa dei Francescani: apparsa in alcuni documenti dell'VIII secolo, nel XIII venne innalzata una basilica. Costruita in stile gotico, poi in parte barocchizzata. Intorno al 1220 divenne una basilica;
  • la Fortezza di Hohensalzburg: fortilizio voluto nel 1077 da un vescovo, fu ampliata (1495-1519) in seguito fino a renderla autosufficiente, una cittadella armata pronta a difendere la città e il suo vescovo. Alla fine del XIX secolo venne collegata alla città da una funicolare estremamente caratteristica. Ad oggi risulta essere la fortezza più grande ancora intatta d'Europa. Particolarmente degne di interesse sono le camere medievali del principe e il museo della fortezza;
  • la Getreidegasse (Vicolo delle Granaglie) con la casa natale di Mozart;

Teatri

  • il Landestheater
  • il piccolo ed il grande Festspielhaus

Musei

Salisburgo ospita i seguenti musei:

  • il Museo all'Aria Aperta
  • il Museo del Duomo
  • il Museo della Modernità (Mönchsberg)
  • il Museo Carolino Augusteum

Sport

Manifestazioni regolari

Salzburg [edit this]

Gasthof Hotel Doktorwirt
photo by: Schnöll Caroline
[Change image] | [Upload image] Salzburg is dubbed the 'Rome of the North' because of its many churches.
