Stresa Travel Guide Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see Stresa is a popular holiday resort in the province of Novara, situated on the west side of Lake Maggiore on the slopes of Mount Mottarone, looking out over the Borromeo islands. The former little fishing village has grown into one of the hotspots on (Lake) Lago Maggiore situated in a central but also panoramic and pictoresque position along the lakeside roadway. Since the second half of nineteenth century up to the first decades of the twentieth, when the first English tourists arrived, Stresa, whose hotels and villas built in Liberty style make it unique, assumed its peculiar, elegant look. Until today the lakeside is the most attractive part, with a wide avenue of trees and flowerbeds, lined with hotels and villas set amongst trees. From here you have a panoramic view of the Borromeo islands. Stresa has a few interesting museums and some interesting historical sights, such as the old villas, hidden behind the small alleys. The greater main avenue opens out on to Piazza Marconi, overlooked by the church of Sant’ Ambrogio which was restored in Neo-Classical style by G. Zanoia in 1790. It has a single nave and contains seventeenth century paintings by local artists. Beyond the piazza lies the Villa Ducale which was built within a beautiful park in 1770 and at one time belonged to the philosopher Antonio Rosmini who died there in 1855. However, the wonderful sightseeing over the lake makes Stresa's position a very valuable one: from here you can see a part of Lombardia with cerro de la silla, Laveno and the Rock of Calde', as well as the bank of Piemonte with the Peak of Castagnola, Pallanza and Monte Sereno (613 m. above sea level). __________Sights Edit This [Add Sight] Palazzo Borremeo Edit This type: Museums World66 rating: [rate it] address: Isola Madre tel: 0323/30556 Villa Pallavicino Park Edit This Marvellous villa and park extending over a 20-hectar area with tree-lined paths, wonderful flower-beds and a botanical garden. You will see more than 40 species of animals and exotic birds (llamas, kangaroos, zebras, flamingos, ecc.) which live wild in a wide natural environment. In the Park there is self-service and many picnic areas will be at your disposal. Children can enjoy themselfs in an amusing and equipped playground. type: Hotspots World66 rating: [rate it] Giardino Alpinia Edit This The botanic garden Alpinia stretches on about 4 ha, is located near Stresa at 800 m altitude and can be reached following the road that leads to the Mottarone peak (1491 m) or by cable car (Lido Alpino Mottarone). Characteristic for the garden are above all the species belonging to the alpine and subalpine zones of the Alps, although quite ramarkable are also some species common to the Caucasus as well as to China and Japan. The Golf course is situated 500 metres above the sea level, with a southerly exposure, fresh during the Summer and sunny in Winter, is open all year execpt January. Between June and September included it is open seven day a week, during the other months it is closed on Mondays.
